Our Festival is certainly one of the best in the area and brings benefits to Tongwynlais and Whitchurch by strengthening community spirit, by enhancing and promoting the advantages of our villages, by increasing footfall and business opportunities, and by having fun! Featured events include the Sunset Fayre at Tongwynlais and the Fete on Whitchurch Common, as well as concerts, quizzes and lots of other events and activities.

We want to make this year’s Festival even more vibrant and exciting and as well as the events which we organise, there is the opportunity for others to be arranged by the clubs, organisations, services and businesses in our area. This might be something to showcase your own group, a ‘taster’ activity which would allow you to sign up new participants, or an event to raise money for you or for a charity which you can nominate. It might be something which you have organised before or an idea for a new activity. Please give consideration to this as soon as you can and let us know so that there is time to include your idea in the planning. If you would like to talk about your idea before committing, then give Keith Moger a ring on 077969 02451 and he will happily discuss it with you.

It takes a lot of hard work to plan, organise and run the Festival and the more helpers we have, the more and better things we can do.  Do you have some spare time that could be put to good use by helping with the Festival?  If so please do get in touch.  Whatever your talents and skills, we can put them to good use helping with this, one of the best community Festivals in Cardiff.

Chairing the Festival Committee this year is Councillor Linda Morgan. Re-elected as a member of Cardiff City Council, Linda is well known in our communities as a teacher, musician and community leader.  Following in the footsteps of her Dad, the late Councillor Winston Griffiths, who started the Festival in 1979, Linda brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to this role.  Here she sets out her hopes for this year’s Festival.

There are probably many individuals who take over a role from one of their parents, in a family business for example.  But there are not likely to be many in the situation in which I find myself – not only following in the footsteps of my Father Winston but also of my Son, Jonathan Morgan, who has chaired the Festival Committee for the past two years.  With the arrival of twins recently, Jonathan has decided to step aside for the time being and somehow I was elected to the role – that will  teach me to not miss a meeting!   Seriously, I am delighted to fulfil this position and with a strong and experienced team around me, I know that once again this year we will be able to offer a well rounded Festival event.  With a mix of well-established and new events, there should be something for everyone to enjoy.

What do we need to make the Festival a success?  In a word Support, for the events on offer.  So please come along to the concerts, the quizzes, the sporting events, the Fete and the other activities on offer and join in.  As you can imagine, a great deal of work goes into putting these on and we are fortunate that so many people are prepared to help.  Their reward is in knowing that people have enjoyed themselves; there is nothing worse than having a poor turnout.  So look out for the free programme which you will be able to collect from local shops and businesses soon and make a note of the dates of the events – and come along!

Let’s celebrate Summer and improve the spirit of the communities of Whitchurch and Tongwynlais by enjoying ourselves at the Festival.
